Department of Heartwarming Things

I don’t know why but this story, linked to in today’s Publisher’s Lunch, about a little literary magazine started by a 57 year old woman in St. Paul, Minnesota winning a prestigious award warmed my wintry heart.  I think it was the name, Grey Sparrow, and the fact that the founder was inspired by a bird outside her window: “The sparrow is a modest little bird that isn’t full of flash and dazzle . . . It never crowds our feeder or chases anyone off. Just a little bird, nondescript, doesn’t stand out, but is so welcome every day.”  Besides which I love the exclamatory cover line “Best New Literary Journal of the Year!” above the modest, homely, homespun painting.  All of which is just to say: yay for little literary magazines, and the people who make them happen.
