Books as Objects

This Newsweek piece (also cited in today’s Publisher’s Lunch) on books as luxury objects becomes just a tad sneering, but I couldn’t be more impressed by the work that high-end publishers like Taschen, Phaidon, and Assouline are doing today.  Their books are stunningly beautiful, and enormously labor-intensive to create, and if rich people want to buy them just to decorate their only-for-show libraries, I say good for everyone: it’s still helping to sell books.  Likewise, if these publishers want to extend their brand identity to include paper weights and humidors, I say… why not?  I’m not sure I’d buy an Assouline scented candle but these bonded leather notebooks are beautiful and I totally covet them.
